This is a newer version of a photo I had rescued from an old point & shoot camera I had taken several years ago when I first started hiking in the Olympics. The original is here: http://fav.me/d5noykm A long, steep climb up the Brothers Wilderness trail in the southeast Olympic Mountains had followed the path of a dried up river for several miles until suddenly, we heard the rush and roar of a huge amount of water gushing from a crack in the mountainside. Spurred by the sound, we hurried around the next bend in the trail to find an old log bridge crossing the riverbed, now alive with crisp, cold water! A short hike down the bank and upstream a bit brought us to an unreal site: a cave with a torrent of a waterfall pouring through it, illuminated by a hole in the rocks that formed the cave! It was a photographers dream come true. Several years and several thousand photographs later, I wanted to return to this place and do it better justice. The hike was a brutal one, and this time I relaxed by shooting in the middle of the stream. The water was frigid! However, it was well worth it.
